About Matteo Secchi – Voice of the Real Venice

My name is Matteo Secchi, and I was born and raised in the heart of Venice. I am a passionate Venetian, a cultural advocate, and the spokesperson of Venessia.com, the most recognized civic group dedicated to defending the soul of our city.  

For over two decades, I’ve been on the frontline of Venice’s biggest battles — from over-tourism and depopulation, to the preservation of our traditions and identity. My voice has echoed far beyond the lagoon, thanks to countless appearances on international television, in global newspapers, and through collaborations with documentary filmmakers, journalists, and institutions seeking an honest insight into the real Venice. 

Through Venessia.com, we’ve organized bold, symbolic actions that gained global attention — from mock passport checkpoints at Piazzale Roma, to “Funeral for the City” events, to campaigns against cruise ship invasions. Our aim is always the same: to awaken global awarenessand protect the human fabric of our beloved city.  Whether speaking to journalists, hosting a foreign TV crew, or guiding travelers behind the façades of Venice, I bring one thing above all: authenticity. I speak as a true Venetian who knows every canal, campo, and contradiction of this magical place.
